Nordic Food Day at COP 23 – November 9th, 2017

For a little over a month now, I have been working as an external consultant at the Nordic Council of Ministers, the official body for intergovernmental cooperation in the Nordic countries. My main assignment has been to build up the programme for Nordic Food Day at COP 23 in Bonn on November 9th, 2017.

Nordic Food Day is the kick-off of the Nordic Food Policy Lab, one of six flagship projects under the Nordic Solutions to Global Challenges initiative launched by the five prime ministers of the Nordic countries. Nordic Food Day will serve as a platform to feature different voices influencing and facilitating top-down and bottom-up approaches to food policy, and, in turn, sustainable change in our global food system.

As a Canadian who came to Denmark and Norway nine years ago to study and learn from the Nordic model for sustainable development, it has been an absolute pleasure to demonstrate how the Nordic countries address the nexus between people, food systems and policies. One of the most interesting approaches from this region is that most of the policies are consumer-driven, meaning that change really comes from the bottom up. Take, for example, food waste: politicians started taking food waste seriously when citizens demanded change after they had become informed and aware of the impact that food waste has on the environment. Each Nordic country is formulating or has formulated its own policies for addressing this systemic challenge.

If you are coming to COP 23, please make sure to stop by the Nordic Pavilion in the Bonn Zone on November 9th. We have an all-star line up of dreamers, visionaries and enablers, all of whom are improving the sustainability of the global food system. Nordic Food Day will be moderated by Dan Saladino, journalist and producer, BBC Food Programme!
